About Us
Our Story: Faith, Fellowship, and Diversity
[Introduction] Welcome to the Church of St. Paul’s & Resurrection. We are a vibrant, inclusive congregation where rich history meets modern diversity. Our story is one of growth, community service, and the beautiful blending of cultures. We lovingly embrace humanity in all its variety and cordially invite worshippers from every walk of life to experience our unique fellowship. We are affiliated to the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and to the Church of South India Diaspora Diocese.
A Legacy Built in Wood-Ridge
Our journey began over a century ago. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church held its very first service on February 9, 1913, with just a handful of families gathering in a former plumber’s shop on Hackensack Street. As our church family rapidly grew, we moved to our present home at the corner of Center and Humboldt streets in May 1920.
Today, our beautifully modernized sanctuary—featuring superb, historic Tiffany stained glass windows—stands as a beacon of faith. Our campus also includes Cosbey Hall, a multipurpose space dedicated to serving the community.
A Century of Service and Social Action
For over 110 years, through times of war and peace, prosperity and adversity, our congregation has been a constant and caring presence in the Wood-Ridge community. We believe faith requires action. Throughout our history, St. Paul’s has taken an active, hands-on role in addressing vital social issues, including:
– Standing against racism and welcoming refugees and immigrants.
– Fighting poverty and homelessness.
– Promoting childhood literacy and education.
Two Traditions, One Family
In 1991, a beautiful new chapter began when the Church of St. Paul’s merged with the Church of the Resurrection from East Rutherford—a congregation with deep roots in the Church of South India.
Under the dedicated leadership of Rev. Jacob David, the Church of St. Paul’s & Resurrection became a shining model of racial, cultural, and spiritual diversity. Today, we celebrate our shared faith by blending the traditions of both the Episcopal Church and the Church of South India.
